Softball Qualifier EventVonk, van Dalen help Netherlands to end Olympic Qualifier with a win

The Netherlands ended the Softball Qualifier Europe/Africa with a win against the Czech Republic, 7-0 in 5 innings. Maxime van Dalen got two hits, including a double, while Britt Vonk hit a pair of RBI’s.

Thanks to this result, the Dutch Team ended the Super Round with a 1-2 record. On the other side, the Czech Republic didn’t get a victory in the second part of the tournament.

The Netherlands broke the tie in the fourth inning. With one out, Damishah Charles singled. Then, she stole second. Later, Maxime Van Dalen doubled to deep left center to make the score 1-0.

The host team added six more runs in the fifth. In this frame, Britt Vonk hit a 2 RBI single. Damishah Charles, Maxime Van Dalen and Wies Ligtvoet also plated home a run with a hit.

Ginger de Weert took the win. Katelyn Humhej suffered the loss.

In the third inning, Rebecca Soumeru pitched for the last time with the Netherlands. She earned a standing ovation from the mates and the fans. Besides, she also took a curtain call. In her career with the Dutch Seniores Team,  she also competed at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

The top eight softball teams from the Europe-Africa region will travel to the Netherlands and compete at the Take Off to Tokyo in 2019. The tournament will be hosted in Utrecht from the 23rd to the 27th of July, and will showcase six European and two African countries as they battle it out on the softball field. Eight teams will compete, but only one team will earn their ticket to Tokyo.
