Softball Qualifier EventSpain ends Qualifier with a win over South Africa

Thanks to a brilliant performance from the circle by Ane Barandiaran, Spain defeated South Africa 5-0 and ended the Softball Qualifier Europe/Africa with a win. Spain scored 3 times in the fourth and added two more points in the sixth.

In the fourth inning, Spain broke the tie game. Meritex Blesa and Modrego Lopez opened the frame with a pair of singles. Then, Raquel Moncho Varela doubled to deep left field for the 2-0 lead. Later, Maria Rodriguez Caicoya hit the second double of the inning for the 3-0.

Spain added two more points one inning later. Modrego Lopez hit another RBI single and Moncho Varela sacrificed fly, plated Segura Gimenez.

Ane Barandiaran went the distance, throwing a shutout game with 3 strike outs, 3 hits and 1 base on ball allowed. On the other side, Nushka De Beer took the loss.


The top eight softball teams from the Europe-Africa region will travel to the Netherlands and compete at the Take Off to Tokyo in 2019. The tournament will be hosted in Utrecht from the 23rd to the 27th of July, and will showcase six European and two African countries as they battle it out on the softball field. Eight teams will compete, but only one team will earn their ticket to Tokyo.
