Softball Qualifier EventNerissa Myers homers as Great Britain defeat Spain in Game 1

Nerissa Myers hit two homeruns to guide Great Britain to a 9-2 victory in 6 innings over Spain in the first game of the Softball Qualifier. Tomorrow, Great Britain will face South Africa, while Spain will take on Netherlands.

It was a sunny morning in Utrecht and the Softball Qualifier Europe/Africa was finally underway with the first game of the tournament between Great Britain and Spain. Time Hutchinson had the ball for the British Team. On the other side, Beatriz Parejo was the starting pitcher for the Spanish Team.

In the second inning, Great Britain had the first opportunity to score, but were unsuccessful. With one out Georgina Corrick hit a single and Chloe Wigington took 4 balls. With two runners on base, Amie Hutchinson flied out to center field, followed by Sydney Brown who grounded out to shortstop.

Spain took the lead in the first half of the third inning. With one out, Candela Garcia and Carla Segura singled. Meritxell Blesa hit a single but, in the action, Great Britain made a great defensive play and got Garcia Cabedo out at third. Later in the inning, Uxua Modrego singled to left center for the 1-0 lead.

In the second half of the third inning, Great Britain overturned the result. Aubrey Peterson singled and Nerissa Myers homered to deep center field for the 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Great Britain extended the lead. Chloe Wignigton tripled and Amie Hutchinson doubled for the 3-1. Then, Sydney Brown walked. All the players went to scoring position, with a passed ball. Then, Peterson hit a sacrifice fly for the 4-0. Spain got the second out, but Alicia Wolny hit a single and Amy Moore doubled for the 6-1.

On the other side, Spain tried to bounce back but it couldn’t. Hannah Edwards, the British relief pitcher closed the door, allowing only one point and 2 hits in 3 innings, and got the win.

In the sixth inning, Nerissa Myers hit another blast for the 7-2 lead. Great Britain added 2 more points in the same frame and got the win 9-2 thanked to the Mercy Rule.

Tomorrow, Great Britain will face South Africa at 13.00, while Spain will take on Netherlands at 19.00.


The top eight softball teams from the Europe-Africa region will travel to the Netherlands and compete at the Take Off to Tokyo in 2019. The tournament will be hosted in Utrecht from the 23rd to the 27th of July, and will showcase six European and two African countries as they battle it out on the softball field. Eight teams will compete, but only one team will earn their ticket to Tokyo.
